Shot on location at Bellvue, this film combines elements from disparate genres including film noir, documentary, police procedural, and hospital drama. Richard Conte stars as Fred Rowen an undercover cop investigating the murder of a young intern. Posing as a doctor, Rowen discovers a narcotics ring involving not only the hospital’s friendly yet vaguely creepy elevator operator, Pop, but Fred’s love interest, nurse Ann Sebastian (Coleen Gray). This is a strange film to watch in the era of ACAB. John Alexander plays Inspector Gordon as a loud, no-nonsense cop but his character registers as bullying rather than bluff. The sound quality is a bit tinny given the limits of the recording equipment but the shots of New York City– its streets and skyline– are very impressive.
