Pinkertons (225)

The Internet Archive Books Image repository includes over 5 million images taken from books. I’ve been playing around with it.

This is an image representing the Paris Commune of 1871.

This illustration appears to show Uncle Sam as an immigration official warning a recent arrival to leave any un-American ideologies at the border.

These last images come from Allan Pinkerton’s book Strikers, Communists, and Tramps published in 1876. Pinkerton founded one of the first private police forces in the United States, the Pinkerton National Detective Agency, which still operates today. Pinkerton operatives were often used as strike breakers, industrial spies, and hired muscle. Pinkerton wrote about his exploits in a series of popular books “based on” true events. Dashiell Hammett briefly worked for the Pinkertons, and his experiences provide a foundation for his own crime writing, particularly in the character of the Continental Op, who appears in Red Harvest.
