General Remarks on Papers (HUM303)

In no particular order (something a good paper should never do) here are some general comments about papers and academic writing.

1. Writers don’t “talk” about topics. They write about them. This is an issue of diction (word choice). Make sure you a) set up a quote properly and b) use the appropriate language. For example, a phrase such as “in the essay it says that language and ideology are related” is clumsy. A better construction would be “Belsey argues that language and ideology are related.”
