Declassified and Rebranded

I gave a piece of bad information on Thursday.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1973.

Yet until the mid-1980s “the DSM-II diagnosis of Sexual Orientation Disturbance (SOD) replaced Homosexuality. Accordingly, individuals comfortable with their homosexuality were no longer considered mentally ill. Only those who were ‘in conflict with’ their sexual orientation had a mental disorder.”

Transgender people were categorized in the DSM as suffering from “gender identity disorder” until 2012. They are now diagnosed as being subject to “gender dysphoria”– a term that essentially functions as a rebranding of the idea that transgender people suffer emotional stress from the feeling of having been born the wrong sex.
