The bulk of our time in this latter half of the semester was spent on The Mill on the Floss, a book we prepared for by reading Catherine Belsey’s essay “Constructing the Subject, Deconstructing the Text,” a demanding yet rewarding discussion of the role of the realist novel in interpellating the reader.
